Dicanta Dachshunds

Miniature and Kaninchen Dachshunds

Kaninchen (Rabbit) and Miniature Dachunds

Many will already know of the Miniature dachshund, who’ve been around for many years in Australia. They are the smaller size to the original Standard dachshund size. Miniature dachshunds are bred to be approximately 4.5kg in weight,

Kaninchen (Rabbit) dachshunds are only newly recognised in Australia as of 2020, but have been accepted in Europe and Asian countries for many years. They are the smallest variety of Dachshund, smaller than a miniature. How a dachshund is categorised overseas in these countries is by chest circumference at 15 months of age - depending on the size of their chest, they are then registered as that particular sizer of dachshund.

Intervertebral Disc Disease

(IVDD)

Dachshunds are unfortunately prone to developing IVDD, as a chondrodysplastic (dwarf) breed with long backs. IVDD can result in debilitating back pain, paralysis, and loss of bladder/ bowel control, which can be permanent if not diagnosed and treated promptly. The number of dachshunds affected in their lifetime with IVDD is estimated between 18-24% - that’s 1 in 4 dachshunds, which has unfortunately been rising due to the increase in unregistered “backyard” breeders.

The exact cause of IVDD is not known. However, there are several contributing risk factors which include:

  1. Genetics and/or Calcifications,
  2. Structure and physical health
  3. Injury/ trauma/ repeated forces to the back

IVDD - Disc Calficiations

Calcifications occur around the spinal discs, in between the spinal bones. The discs are a fibrous, gel-like “cushion” between each bone to help give the spine flexibility and assist in shock absorption along the spinal column. Calcifications occur when there is inflammation around a disc, due to injury, repeated forces, or degeneration. The body deposits calcium around the disc to try to improve the stability of the disc, the calcium deposits becoming hard like bone. However, over time, this makes the spine less flexible, and can result in cracking of this calcium coating around the spinal disc, leading to disc prolapse, and spinal cord compression. Research has found a high correlation between the number of spinal calcifications and the risk of developing IVDD.

Calcifications can be visualised and

counted via x-rays.

Back Scoring

To count the calcifications around the spinal discs (the intervertebral spaces), a series of 5 x-rays are performed with the dog in different positions to best see the intervertebral spaces. This is performed between the ages of 2-4 years of age, to allowing for full calcification.

The number of calcifications are counted, and from this, a grading is given, which correlates with an estimated risk of IVDD.

This is why we at Dicanta Dachshunds decide to put the extra effort into our dogs and back score – so we can do our utmost to reduce the risk of IVDD

My beautiful Alice was my first import from a dear friend. She is a shaded cream dapple. She is the sweetest girl. She mothers the other dogs - she can usually be found cleaning someone’s ears.

She is a lazy princess - she refuses to go out when it’s wet or cold, and can usually be found curled up somewhere resting. She’s very emotionally in tune and a beautiful little support dog.
